Impact assessment caused by bradyseism phenomena in the Campi Flegrei area

چکیده
Campi Flegrei (Italy) is among the areas with greatest volcanic explosive risk in world due to dangerousness of expected hazards, high exposed value (about 500,000 people will be evacuated during “alarm phase”), and vulnerability urban settlements under effect phenomena. The last two dramatic bradyseism phases occurred 1969–1972 1982–1984 when Pozzuoli town was affected by rapid ground inflation, which brought an overall higher level about 3.5 m caused numerous earthquakes (M ≤ 4.2), severe damage buildings. During 1984, seismicity intense, 33 events 0.5 < M 3 six 3.8. Subsequently, caldera characterized general subsidence for 20 years until 2005, a new inflation period started still ongoing (∼1 m). areal distribution recent uplift maximum vertical displacement Pozzuoli, radial decrease from center outwards. need better understand activity fundamental protecting population hazards linked eruptions understanding role as possible precursor potential eruption. Hazard assessment during caldera unrest at the Campi Flegrei, Italy: a contribution from gravity–height gradients
Hazard assessment and risk mitigation at restless calderas is only possible with adequate geophysical monitoring. We show here how detailed long-term microgravity and deformation surveys may contribute to hazard assessment at the Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc) in Italy by evaluating gravity–height change (∆g/∆h) gradients obtained during ground inflation and deflation between 1981 and 2001. Such g...
متن کاملProgressive approach to eruption at Campi Flegrei caldera in southern Italy
Unrest at large calderas rarely ends in eruption, encouraging vulnerable communities to perceive emergency warnings of volcanic activity as false alarms. A classic example is the Campi Flegrei caldera in southern Italy, where three episodes of major uplift since 1950 have raised its central district by about 3 m without an eruption. Individual episodes have conventionally been treated as indepe...
متن کاملRapid differentiation in a sill-like magma reservoir: a case study from the campi flegrei caldera
In recent decades, geophysical investigations have detected wide magma reservoirs beneath quiescent calderas. However, the discovery of partially melted horizons inside the crust is not sufficient to put constraints on capability of reservoirs to supply cataclysmic eruptions, which strictly depends on the chemical-physical properties of magmas (composition, viscosity, gas content etc.), and thu...
متن کاملModeling Day- and Nighttime Population Exposure at High Resolution: Application to Volcanic Risk Assessment in Campi Flegrei
Improving analyses of population exposure to potential natural hazards, especially sudden ones, requires more detailed geodemographic data. Availability of such information for large areas is limited by specific database requirements and their cost. This paper introduces and tests a new approach for refining spatio-temporal population distribution at high resolution by combining diverse geoinfo...
متن کاملMagma transfer at Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy) before the 1538 AD eruption
Calderas are collapse structures related to the emptying of magmatic reservoirs, often associated with large eruptions from long-lived magmatic systems. Understanding how magma is transferred from a magma reservoir to the surface before eruptions is a major challenge. Here we exploit the historical, archaeological and geological record of Campi Flegrei caldera to estimate the surface deformatio...
